Why I May Stop Writing on Medium

A few years ago I thrilled to discover Medium.

A friend posting on it told me about the site. She wrote, shared about her life, her jewelry and other businesses. She was working hard to make money on it.

I looked at it. Again and then another time. Finally I created an account, wrote a piece and posted it.

My piece was no great literature. It was just a bit of sharing about my life at the time. I don’t know how or with whom I shared it. I didn’t even think about checking the stats then. I was just happy to see what I had written show up on screen in a format other than on my own word processor screen.

I kept writing. Posting on Medium. I learned to throw up some photos or illustrations to my posts, creating a bit more interest in them. I added tags to my posts, got a few readers here and there. Few comments but each were encouraging to me.

I began encouraging others to post their writings, especially my confessional poetry writer friend. I wanted others to see her work.

Time passed. The pandemic drove our lives. I and others continued to write. Medium changed a bit, adding a few bells and whistles. I signed up for the ‘Making Money on Medium” plan.

I got a few more followers, skimpy comments and claps but readership continued to grow enough to keep me interested. Besides, I had stories, thoughts, beliefs, I wanted to share with not everyone but with many.
